Accra, Ghana – The Attorney-General has opposed an application for bail pending appeal by Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, arguing that his appeal against the 20-year prison sentence has no reasonable prospect of success.
The State’s position was presented before the court as part of proceedings concerning Wontumi’s bid to secure bail while challenging his conviction and sentence.
Attorney-General Opposes Bail Pending Appeal
According to the Attorney-General, the grounds being relied upon by Wontumi in his appeal do not provide sufficient basis to justify his release pending the determination of the case.
The State is therefore urging the court to reject the bail application, maintaining that the appeal does not present reasonable prospects of overturning the decision that resulted in the 20-year sentence.
Wontumi Challenges Conviction
Wontumi, who has been handed a 20-year prison term, is seeking to challenge the decision through the appellate process.
His legal team is also seeking his release while the appeal is considered, setting the stage for a legal contest over whether he should remain in custody during the proceedings.
Court to Consider Arguments
The latest development means the court will have to consider arguments from both sides before determining whether bail pending appeal should be granted.
The Attorney-General’s opposition represents the State’s position and does not, by itself, determine the outcome of Wontumi’s appeal.
The case continues to attract significant public and political attention, with many Ghanaians closely following developments surrounding the former NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman.
