Ghana Police Reportedly Pursue Former Boxer Following Alleged Threats

Former Ghanaian boxer and boxing promoter Michael Nii Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayittey Powers, has reportedly come under police scrutiny following alleged death threats directed at National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.

The development has attracted significant attention within Ghana’s boxing community, with the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) calling on the police to investigate the matter and take appropriate legal action if the allegations are established.

Alleged Threats Spark Controversy

Reports indicate that comments allegedly made by Ayittey Powers on social media were interpreted as threats against the NSA Director-General.

The controversy comes amid an ongoing dispute involving boxing promotions and the administration of the sport in Ghana.

The GBIMC has described threats against a public official as unacceptable and said it has formally requested a police investigation into the matter.

Boxing Committee Calls for Investigation

According to the GBIMC, the police should investigate the allegations and pursue appropriate legal action where the evidence supports such action.

The committee has also announced disciplinary proceedings against Ayittey Powers as part of efforts to regulate and restructure boxing in Ghana.

Ayittey Powers Later Apologises

Following the controversy, Ayittey Powers reportedly issued an apology to Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.

In his response, the former boxer denied any intention to cause physical harm and said his earlier remarks were made out of anger. He also appealed directly to the NSA Director-General for forgiveness.

Dispute Linked to Boxing Promotion

The dispute reportedly has roots in disagreements surrounding the suspension of professional boxing activities in Ghana and the cancellation of a boxing promotion associated with Ayittey Powers.

The former boxer has previously raised concerns over financial losses connected to cancelled boxing events, adding to tensions between him and officials responsible for the administration of the sport.

Investigation Remains Key

The allegations remain subject to investigation, and any criminal responsibility would ultimately have to be determined through due process.

The controversy has nevertheless renewed calls for responsible public communication, professionalism and peaceful dispute resolution within Ghana’s boxing community.
