TikTok Overtakes YouTube as Ghana’s Biggest Data Consumer, MTN Ghana CEO Says
The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, has revealed that TikTok is currently the biggest consumer of internet data in Ghana, challenging the common perception that YouTube dominates the country’s data usage.
According to Blewett, many Ghanaians may assume that YouTube consumes the largest amount of internet data because of its popularity as a video-streaming platform. However, he said available usage trends point to TikTok as the leading platform in terms of internet data consumption.
“TikTok is the biggest consumer of internet data in Ghana. A lot of people think it’s YouTube, but they’re wrong,” Stephen Blewett said.
TikTok’s Growing Influence in Ghana
The revelation highlights the rapidly growing influence of short-form video content among Ghanaian internet users.
TikTok has become increasingly popular for entertainment, news, education, music, business promotion, comedy, and social commentary. The platform’s continuous stream of short videos encourages users to spend significant amounts of time scrolling and watching content.
For content creators, businesses, influencers, and media organizations, the development also underscores the importance of TikTok as a major digital platform in Ghana’s evolving online ecosystem.
What the Development Means for Internet Users
The growing consumption of mobile data through video-based platforms continues to shape Ghana’s telecommunications industry, with social media and digital entertainment becoming an increasingly important part of everyday internet usage.
Blewett’s comments have since generated discussions online, particularly among social media users who have long debated which platform consumes the most internet data in Ghana.
The statement also serves as an interesting reminder for users who frequently stream videos on mobile networks to monitor their data consumption.
