Accra, Ghana – Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang on Friday joined residents, traders, and government officials in the National General Cleaning Exercise, participating in sanitation activities at the Nungua Market and around the Presidency precincts in Accra.

Her participation forms part of the government’s nationwide campaign to improve environmental sanitation, promote public health, and reduce the risk of flooding following the recent heavy rains that affected several parts of the country.

Vice President Leads Cleanup Efforts

The Vice President actively took part in the exercise alongside community members, helping to reinforce the importance of environmental cleanliness and civic responsibility.

The National General Cleaning Exercise focuses on clearing drains, removing refuse, sweeping public spaces, and improving sanitation in markets, streets, and other public areas across the country.

President Mahama Also Participates

Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama also set off to participate in the nationwide exercise and was expected to join cleanup activities at various locations across the Accra Metropolis.

The participation of both the President and Vice President highlights the government’s determination to lead by example in promoting a cleaner and healthier Ghana.

Government Reaffirms Commitment to Environmental Sanitation

The National General Cleaning Exercise forms part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen environmental management, improve public health, and build resilience against future flooding.

Authorities believe regular community participation in sanitation activities will help prevent the blockage of drains, reduce flood risks, and create safer, healthier communities.

The initiative also encourages collaboration between government institutions, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), security agencies, private organizations, and citizens to maintain clean environments.
