ACCRA, Ghana – President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to accountability, transparency, and sound public financial management following the swearing-in of Dr. Pamela Graham as Ghana’s new Auditor-General.
Speaking during the official swearing-in ceremony, President Mahama stressed that strong institutions remain the foundation of good governance and sustainable national development. He noted that effective oversight of public resources is essential to restoring macroeconomic stability, promoting economic growth, and improving the lives of Ghanaians.
Accountability Key to Ghana’s Economic Transformation : President Mahama emphasized that Ghana’s economic recovery and long-term development agenda depend largely on integrity, efficiency, and discipline in the management of public finances.
According to him, government efforts to stabilize the economy, expand social protection programmes, increase investment in infrastructure, and accelerate national development can only succeed if public funds are managed responsibly and transparently.
He stated that every cedi of public money must be properly accounted for to ensure value for money and strengthen public confidence in state institutions.
Auditor-General’s Office Must Strengthen Governance : The President charged the new Auditor-General to ensure that audit reports become practical instruments for improving governance rather than merely fulfilling constitutional and statutory requirements.
He explained that audit findings should support stronger internal controls, promote accountability within public institutions, detect financial irregularities, eliminate waste, and improve the efficient use of state resources.
President Mahama further encouraged Dr. Pamela Graham to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, independence, fairness, and integrity in carrying out her constitutional responsibilities.
Strong Institutions Safeguard Democracy : Highlighting the importance of independent oversight institutions, President Mahama said the strength of any democratic nation depends not only on elected leaders but also on institutions capable of holding governments accountable.
“The strength of every democracy is measured not only by those who govern but also by the institutions that hold governments accountable,” President Mahama stated.
He noted that independent institutions such as the Auditor-General’s Department play a critical role in protecting the public purse, promoting transparency, and ensuring responsible governance.
Dr. Pamela Graham Assumes Office : Dr. Pamela Graham officially assumes office as Auditor-General at a time when Ghana continues to pursue economic reforms aimed at strengthening fiscal discipline, improving revenue mobilization, and enhancing accountability in public expenditure.
Her appointment is expected to reinforce government efforts to improve financial oversight, strengthen public institutions, and promote prudent management of national resources.
Many governance experts believe her leadership will contribute significantly to enhancing public sector accountability and improving confidence in Ghana’s financial management systems.
