Accra, Ghana – July 1, 2026 – The Government of Ghana has strongly condemned the killing of a Ghanaian national in South Africa during anti-immigrant demonstrations linked to ongoing xenophobic attacks.
In a press statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government expressed profound shock and sadness over the fatal shooting of Mr. Bashiru Isak, 40, in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, on June 30, 2026.
According to the statement, Mr. Isak was killed during demonstrations associated with xenophobic violence targeting foreign nationals in South Africa.
Ghana Condemns Xenophobic Violence The Government of Ghana described the incident as a senseless act of violence and strongly condemned the increasing wave of xenophobic attacks against African nationals, including Ghanaians, living in South Africa.
“The taking of any life is unacceptable, and those responsible must be brought to justice without delay,” the statement emphasized.
Ghana Registers Formal Protest The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed that Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria has officially lodged a protest with South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation and has also filed a formal complaint with the South African Police Service.
These actions were taken after authorities confirmed the identity of the deceased and informed his family. At the request of the Government of Ghana, an autopsy has also been conducted.
Call for Thorough Investigation Ghana is demanding a full, transparent, and expedited investigation into the killing, with authorities calling for the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.
The government also urged South African authorities to strengthen protection for Ghanaian citizens and other foreign nationals living in affected communities, emphasizing the need to guarantee their safety, dignity, and fundamental rights.
Matter Referred to the African Union The Ministry further revealed that Ghana has already submitted a formal petition to the African Union Commission (AUC) concerning xenophobic attacks against African nationals in South Africa.
Government officials stated that the petition remains active and expressed hope that the African Union will treat the matter with the urgency it deserves during its next statutory meeting.
Government Reaffirms Commitment to Citizens Abroad The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the welfare of Ghanaians living abroad and pledged to continue engaging South African authorities until justice is served.
The tragic death of Mr. Bashiru Isak has renewed concerns over the safety of African migrants in South Africa, where xenophobic violence has periodically claimed lives and displaced communities.
