Accra, Ghana – Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has reached a significant milestone, achieving 70% Universal Health Coverage (UHC) as of mid-2026, according to the Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe.
The announcement, made in Accra, marks a major step forward in Ghana’s quest to provide affordable and accessible healthcare to all citizens. The achievement represents a substantial increase from the 56% coverage recorded when the current NHIA leadership assumed office.
NHIS Records Remarkable Growth
Dr. Bampoe described the progress as one of the most significant accomplishments in Ghana’s healthcare sector, noting that the NHIS has become one of Africa’s leading examples of expanding access to quality healthcare.
He attributed the increase in coverage to the dedication and hard work of NHIA staff across the country, who have implemented innovative registration and outreach programmes aimed at bringing health insurance closer to the people.
Innovative Outreach Programmes Drive Success
According to Dr. Bampoe, several flagship initiatives have played a crucial role in expanding NHIS membership and improving healthcare access nationwide.
These initiatives include:
- Market Storm, which took NHIS registration and education directly to traders and market communities.
- Campus Connect, designed to enroll students and young people across tertiary institutions.
- Faith and Wellness Drive, which partnered with churches and faith-based organizations to increase awareness and registration among congregants.
The outreach programmes have enabled the NHIS to reach thousands of Ghanaians who previously had limited access to health insurance services.
CEO Commends NHIA Staff
While celebrating the milestone, Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe commended the commitment and professionalism of NHIA staff for helping transform the Scheme into one of Africa’s most talked-about public health success stories.
He encouraged employees not to become complacent but to continue improving service delivery and strengthening public confidence in the Scheme.
“We must innovate harder, serve better, and guard every cedi,” Dr. Bampoe urged.
He emphasized the importance of prudent financial management, continuous innovation, and excellent customer service in sustaining the gains achieved by the NHIS.
Commitment to Universal Healthcare
Dr. Bampoe reaffirmed the NHIA’s commitment to building a health insurance system that guarantees dignity, quality healthcare, and financial protection for every Ghanaian.
He stressed that achieving 70% Universal Health Coverage is an important milestone but also a motivation to work toward even greater healthcare access for all citizens.
The NHIS continues to play a vital role in Ghana’s healthcare system by reducing financial barriers to medical care and supporting the government’s broader goal of achieving universal health coverage.
