President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned a new 85-bed ward complex at the Ghana Police Hospital in Accra, alongside announcing major investments in hospital expansion, police vehicles and accommodation.
The new facility is expected to improve healthcare delivery for police officers, their families and members of the general public who rely on the hospital for medical services.
At the commissioning ceremony on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, the President also presented two ambulances to the hospital to strengthen emergency response and patient transportation.
Mahama Announces GH¢200 Million for Hospital Expansion
President Mahama announced plans to provide more than GH¢200 million in the 2027 Budget to complete the long-delayed Police Hospital expansion project.
He said the government had decided to terminate the existing contract following prolonged disagreements with the contractor and rising project costs.
The government intends to complete the remaining work and bring the expanded facilities into service before the end of 2027.
According to reports, the expansion is expected to add 106 beds to the hospital, taking its total capacity to more than 300 beds. Planned facilities include a 12-bed intensive care unit, a new accident and emergency centre, modern MRI and CT scan equipment, consulting rooms and additional surgical theatres.
Two Ambulances Presented to Police Hospital
As part of efforts to improve emergency healthcare, President Mahama presented two ambulances to the Ghana Police Hospital.
The vehicles are expected to support the transportation of patients and improve the hospital’s ability to respond to urgent medical cases.
The President stressed the importance of ensuring that ambulances are supported by trained personnel, appropriate medical equipment and regular maintenance to maximise their effectiveness.
GH¢300 Million Planned for 250 Police Housing Units
Beyond healthcare, the President announced plans to allocate GH¢300 million in the 2027 Budget for the construction of 250 housing units for police personnel.
The proposed project is intended to help ease congestion in police barracks and improve accommodation for officers.
The housing initiative forms part of broader measures aimed at strengthening police welfare and supporting personnel who work to protect lives and property across the country.
Additional Armoured Vehicles for Police Service
President Mahama also announced that a second batch of 40 armoured vehicles was expected to be delivered to the Ghana Police Service in the coming weeks.
The announcement follows the handover of 50 armoured vehicles to the Service in December 2025. The government is also procuring additional protective equipment for officers deployed on operational duties.
These measures are intended to improve the operational capacity and protection of police personnel.
Improving Police Welfare and Healthcare Delivery
The commissioning of the 85-bed ward complex and the planned investments in hospital infrastructure, ambulances, vehicles and housing highlight the government’s stated commitment to improving the welfare of security personnel.
The Ghana Police Hospital also serves members of the wider public, making improvements to its capacity and specialist services important beyond the Police Service itself.
The success of the announced initiatives will depend on timely funding, effective implementation and the completion of the planned projects.
