Answer Legitimate Questions
National Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has stressed the need for government to remain open to public scrutiny, insisting that ministers must be prepared to answer legitimate questions about their work and government’s delivery on its promises.
In a statement shared on social media, Asiedu Nketiah said the government should welcome scrutiny and allow citizens and the media to examine its performance against the commitments made to Ghanaians.
Government Must Expect Public Scrutiny
According to Asiedu Nketiah, being in government comes with the responsibility to account to the public.
He stated that ministers should be prepared to respond to legitimate questions and that government activities, decisions and performance should remain subject to public examination.
The NDC chairman’s position comes as the Mahama administration continues to implement policies and programmes outlined in its development agenda.
Promises Must Be Measured Against Delivery
Asiedu Nketiah also emphasised the importance of comparing campaign promises with actual delivery.
He said government commitments should be checked against what is ultimately delivered to citizens, suggesting that accountability should be based on measurable outcomes rather than political rhetoric.
His comments reinforce the role of public scrutiny in assessing government programmes and expenditure.
Call for Stronger Media and Public Oversight
The remarks also align with his recent call for journalists to strengthen their watchdog role by monitoring public projects and expenditure.
Speaking at the 4th Bono Regional Ghana Journalists Association Awards on September 20, 2026, Asiedu Nketiah urged journalists to track major public investments, including project costs, contractors, timelines and implementation outcomes.
He argued that accurate records would allow citizens to assess whether government projects are completed and whether the public receives value for money.
Accountability as Part of Democratic Governance
Asiedu Nketiah’s comments highlight the broader role of accountability in democratic governance, where governments are expected to explain their decisions and allow citizens to assess their performance.
He has also previously argued that political parties must work to rebuild public trust by demonstrating their relevance to changing social and economic conditions.
Government Performance Remains Under Public Attention
The statement comes as the NDC-led government continues to face public attention over the implementation of its policies and development commitments.
The call for scrutiny places emphasis on transparency, evidence-based assessment and the responsibility of public officials to respond to legitimate concerns raised by citizens and the media.
For the government, the challenge remains to demonstrate progress on its promises while maintaining openness to questions about implementation, public spending and results.
