Four officers of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) are among 10 individuals currently being held as investigations continue into recent drug trafficking cases linked to Ghana’s ports.
The development was disclosed after President John Dramani Mahama received a briefing from security chiefs on Thursday, September 17, 2026, on investigations into the trafficking of drugs through Ghana’s ports and borders.
Four Customs Officers Among Those Detained
According to information from the Presidency, 10 individuals, including four Customs officers, are currently being held while investigations continue.
The identities of the four Customs officers have not been disclosed in the Presidency’s statement, and the specific allegations against each individual were not detailed.
The detention forms part of broader investigations into recent narcotics trafficking cases involving Ghana’s ports.
Security Systems at Ghana’s Ports Under Review
During the meeting with security chiefs, President Mahama was briefed on the investigations as well as the security structures and systems currently in place at Ghana’s entry and exit points.
The meeting also considered additional measures aimed at strengthening controls and preventing Ghana’s ports and borders from being used for illicit trafficking activities.
President Mahama Orders Inter-Agency Task Force
Following the briefing, President Mahama directed the formation of an inter-agency task force to develop a comprehensive roadmap for preventing drug trafficking through Ghana’s borders.
The task force has been given two weeks to present its detailed recommendations and proposed measures for strengthening border and port security.
Investigations Still Ongoing
Authorities have not yet announced the outcome of the investigations or indicated whether all 10 individuals will face formal charges.
The reported detention of Customs personnel does not, by itself, establish wrongdoing. Any allegations against the individuals will have to be addressed through the ongoing investigative and legal processes.
Government Moves to Strengthen Port Security
The latest development has renewed attention on security procedures at Ghana’s ports and the need for stronger coordination among agencies responsible for customs, border security and law enforcement.
The government says the new measures are intended to strengthen Ghana’s ability to prevent illicit trafficking through its borders and improve the security systems at key entry and exit points.
