The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has finally opened up on the reasons behind the removal of Haruna Iddrisu and Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka from the party’s parliamentary leadership in 2023.
According to Asiedu Nketiah, the reshuffle was a strategic political decision aimed at strengthening the NDC ahead of the crucial 2024 general elections.
Speaking on the issue, he explained that changing political dynamics at the time required the party to reorganize its “forward line” in Parliament in order to improve the NDC’s chances of electoral victory.
“It Was Never Personal” – Asiedu Nketiah
Asiedu Nketiah revealed that the decision created tension and misunderstanding within sections of the party, with some supporters believing he had personally turned against Haruna Iddrisu and Muntaka.
However, he insisted that the reshuffle had nothing to do with personal differences or hostility toward the two senior party members.
According to him, the move was purely based on strategy and the party’s broader political calculations ahead of the elections.
He noted that difficult decisions are sometimes necessary in politics to reposition a party for success.
Advice to President Mahama After Election Victory
The NDC Chairman further disclosed that following the party’s victory in the 2024 general elections, he personally advised President John Dramani Mahama to appoint Haruna Iddrisu and Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka to key government positions.
He explained that the recommendation was aimed at maintaining unity, stability, and inclusiveness within the NDC after the elections.
Asiedu Nketiah stressed the importance of keeping experienced party members actively involved in governance and national development.
Reactions Within the Party
The revelation has sparked renewed political discussions among party supporters and political observers, many of whom had questioned the circumstances surrounding the 2023 parliamentary leadership reshuffle.
Some supporters believe the explanation confirms that the changes were part of a broader electoral strategy, while others continue to debate the political impact of the decision.
Political analysts say the comments by Asiedu Nketiah offer fresh insight into internal party decisions leading into the 2024 elections and the NDC’s efforts to preserve unity after returning to power.
