The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has assured victims of the devastating fire outbreak at the Police Barracks opposite the Greater Accra Regional Police Headquarters in Accra of government’s full support as recovery efforts continue.
The Minister, accompanied by the Inspector-General of Police and the Chief Fire Officer, visited the affected area to assess the extent of the damage, interact with displaced families, and provide reassurance to residents who lost their homes and belongings in the incident.
The fire outbreak displaced several families and destroyed property worth thousands of Ghana cedis, leaving many residents in urgent need of assistance.
Government to Provide Temporary Accommodation
During the visit, Hon. Muntaka informed affected residents that arrangements are underway to secure temporary accommodation for families displaced by the fire while plans for the reconstruction of the damaged barracks are being finalized.
He assured victims that government remains committed to ensuring that no affected family is left without support during this difficult period.
In addition to housing support, the Minister announced that victims would receive cash assistance, clothing, and other relief items through the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to help them rebuild their lives.
Commends Emergency Responders
Hon. Muntaka praised the Inspector-General of Police, the Police Management Board, and the Ghana National Fire Service for their swift response to the emergency.
According to him, the coordinated efforts of emergency personnel helped contain the situation and prevent further destruction while ensuring the safety of residents.
He acknowledged the professionalism and dedication shown by officers and firefighters who worked tirelessly to manage the incident.
Government Determined to Prevent Future Incidents
The Interior Minister emphasized that government would continue working closely with relevant institutions to investigate the cause of the fire and implement preventive measures to reduce the risk of similar incidents in the future.
He noted that ensuring the safety of security service personnel and their families remains a priority for government.
Authorities are expected to conduct a full assessment of the damage as part of efforts to improve fire safety standards within public residential facilities.
Visits Injured Police Officer
As part of his visit, Hon. Muntaka also paid a visit to a police officer who sustained injuries during the fire outbreak and is currently receiving treatment at the Police Hospital.
The Minister expressed sympathy and solidarity with the injured officer and wished him a speedy recovery.
He also commended the medical team at the Police Hospital for their prompt response and professional care, assuring the officer that government would support him throughout his recovery process.
Support for Affected Families
Hon. Muntaka reiterated government’s commitment to standing with all affected families as recovery and rebuilding efforts continue.
“Our thoughts remain with all the families affected by this unfortunate incident. Government will continue to provide the necessary assistance to ensure that victims receive the support they need during this challenging time,” he stated.
The visit has been welcomed by residents, many of whom expressed appreciation for the government’s quick intervention and commitment to helping them recover from the disaster.
