Accra, Ghana – President John Dramani Mahama has directed the immediate release of GH¢300 million from the Contingency Fund to support flood relief, emergency response, and mitigation efforts following the devastating floods that hit Accra and several parts of southern Ghana after Monday’s heavy rainfall.
The emergency funding is expected to provide urgent assistance to affected families, support rescue operations, and help government agencies restore essential services in communities severely impacted by the disaster.
According to government officials, the funds will be used to provide humanitarian relief, temporary shelter, food supplies, medical assistance, and other emergency interventions for thousands of residents displaced by the floods.
Government Intensifies Flood Response President Mahama’s directive comes after torrential rains caused widespread flooding across several communities, damaging homes, businesses, roads, and other critical infrastructure.
The government has also instructed relevant ministries, security agencies, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and local authorities to intensify rescue operations and provide immediate support to affected residents.
Authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage while working to ensure the safety and welfare of people living in flood-affected areas.
Support for Victims The GH¢300 million allocation is expected to strengthen ongoing relief efforts and assist thousands of families who have lost homes, property, and livelihoods due to the flooding.
Government says the intervention forms part of broader measures to improve disaster preparedness, strengthen drainage infrastructure, and reduce the impact of future flooding across the country.
Calls for Public Cooperation Residents have been urged to cooperate with emergency responders, avoid flood-prone areas, and follow safety directives issued by authorities.
The government has also appealed to individuals, businesses, and humanitarian organizations to support ongoing relief efforts as affected communities begin the recovery process.
Further updates are expected as rescue operations and damage assessments continue.
