Residents of Tamale, Yendi, and several surrounding communities could soon witness a major improvement in water supply as government pushes forward with the implementation of the €312 million Bupe–Tamale–Yendi Water Supply Project.
The assurance emerged during a courtesy call by the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Hon. Adam Mutawakilu, and his technical team on the Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Ali Adolf John, at the Northern Regional Coordinating Council in Tamale on Tuesday, June 16, 2026.
The meeting focused on strategies to accelerate the implementation of the ambitious water infrastructure project, which is expected to significantly improve access to potable water across Northern Ghana.
Key Stakeholders Meet in Tamale
The high-level engagement brought together several key government officials, including the Mayor of Tamale, Hon. Abubakari Adam Takoro; the Municipal Chief Executive for Sagnarigu, Hon. Addressing Decades of Water Challenges
For years, residents in Tamale and surrounding districts have faced recurring water shortages, particularly during periods of rapid population growth and increased demand.
The Bupe–Tamale–Yendi Water Supply Project is expected to provide a long-term solution by expanding water production capacity, improving distribution networks, and enhancing access to safe drinking water for thousands of households.
Officials believe the project will help reduce pressure on existing water systems while supporting economic growth, public health, and urban development in the region.
Boost for Economic and Social Development
Beyond improving access to clean water, the project is expected to stimulate economic activities, support industrial development, and improve living conditions across beneficiary communities.
Experts note that reliable water infrastructure remains critical for healthcare delivery, education, sanitation, agriculture, and business growth.
The investment is therefore being viewed as one of the most significant infrastructure interventions in Northern Ghana in recent years.

Government officials reiterated their commitment to ensuring the successful implementation of the project, emphasizing that access to clean and reliable water remains a national development priority.
Stakeholders expressed optimism that the project would transform water delivery services and improve the quality of life for residents throughout the Northern Region and beyond.
