Workers of the National Identification Authority (NIA) under the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) have announced an indefinite nationwide strike action set to begin on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, citing unresolved concerns regarding their working conditions and staff welfare.
The industrial action was declared through an official directive issued by the NIA Division of the union following what leaders described as a unanimous decision by the Divisional Executive Council after the expiration of a seven-day notice earlier served by the mother union.
According to the statement, all union members across the country have been directed to fully comply with the strike action until their concerns and demands are addressed by the relevant authorities.
The union made it clear that members are expected to stay away from work beginning Wednesday, May 13.
“On Wednesday, May 13, 2026, no member shall report to work. You will rise from your beds and return to them, until further notice, and until our just demands are met,” part of the statement declared.
As part of activities leading to the industrial action, workers have also been instructed to report to their various workplaces on Monday, May 11, and Tuesday, May 12 dressed in red clothing or red armbands as a symbol of protest, solidarity, and resistance.
Union officials explained that the strike decision follows unresolved issues relating to staff welfare, conditions of service, and general workplace concerns affecting workers within the authority.
Although the statement did not provide full details of the grievances, union leaders stressed that several attempts to address the concerns through engagement and negotiations had not yielded satisfactory results.
The PSWU further emphasized that the strike action will remain in force until authorities respond positively and concrete steps are taken to resolve the issues raised by staff.
The planned nationwide strike is expected to significantly affect operations at NIA offices across the country, particularly services related to Ghana Card registration, card replacement, updates, verification, and identity management services.
Members of the public seeking NIA services may therefore experience delays and interruptions if the dispute remains unresolved before the planned strike date.
The development has already attracted public attention, with many citizens expressing concern over the potential impact on essential identification services nationwide.
Labour observers and members of the public are hopeful that government authorities and union leaders will engage in urgent discussions to prevent prolonged disruption of services.
Many stakeholders are also calling for constructive dialogue and swift intervention to help address the concerns of workers while ensuring continuity in the delivery of critical national identification services. National Identification Authority (NIA)
