Accra, Ghana – The Comptroller-General of Immigration (CGI), Mr. Samuel Basintale Amadu, joined residents of the Weija Gbawe Municipality in a large-scale environmental clean-up exercise held in line with the directive of President John Dramani Mahama as part of the nationwide National General Cleaning Exercise.
The exercise forms part of the Government of Ghana’s efforts to improve environmental sanitation, prevent flooding, and promote healthier communities following the recent devastating floods that affected several parts of the country.
Immigration Service Supports National Sanitation Campaign
Leading officers and personnel of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), Mr. Samuel Basintale Amadu worked alongside community members, local leaders, and volunteers to clean public spaces and improve sanitation within the municipality.
The initiative reflects the Ghana Immigration Service’s commitment to supporting national development beyond its core mandate of border security and migration management.
MP Jerry Ahmed Shaib Joins Exercise
Also participating in the exercise was the Member of Parliament for Weija Gbawe, Hon. Jerry Ahmed Shaib, together with other government officials and community leaders.
Their participation highlighted the importance of collaboration between government institutions, elected representatives, and local communities in promoting environmental responsibility and protecting public health.
Speaking during the exercise, participants emphasized that maintaining clean surroundings is a shared responsibility that requires continuous public involvement.
Communities Benefit from Clean-Up Exercise
The clean-up campaign covered several communities within the municipality, including:
- Oblogo
- SCC
- Weija
- Tetegu
- Ash Bread
- Adjoining communities
Residents joined officials in desilting choked drains, clearing accumulated refuse, removing weeds, and restoring cleanliness to streets and public spaces.
The exercise aimed to improve drainage systems, reduce the risk of flooding, and create a healthier environment for residents.
Government Promotes Collective Civic Responsibility
The National General Cleaning Exercise was introduced by President John Dramani Mahama to encourage nationwide participation in environmental sanitation following the recent floods.
Government believes regular community clean-up activities, proper waste management, and stronger public participation are essential to preventing future disasters and improving public health.
Officials urged citizens to continue practicing good sanitation habits and to protect drainage systems by avoiding indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
The successful exercise in Weija Gbawe demonstrates the growing commitment of public institutions, community leaders, and residents to building cleaner, safer, and more resilient communities across Ghana.
