John Dramani Mahama has officially launched Ghana’s new e-passport and online visa application platform, describing the initiative as a major step toward building an efficient, digitally connected, and globally competitive state.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, President Mahama said the initiative goes beyond introducing a digital platform and represents Ghana’s commitment to mobility, innovation, connectivity, economic opportunity, and modern public service delivery.
“We are here not merely to launch a digital platform, but to advance mobility, connectivity, innovation, and economic opportunity,” the President stated.
Modernizing Ghana’s Passport and Visa System
According to President Mahama, the new system is designed to improve travel processes, strengthen national security, and enhance efficiency within Ghana’s passport administration.
The platform will allow applicants around the world to apply online, upload supporting documents electronically, make secure payments, and receive travel authorizations through email without unnecessary delays.
He explained that the initiative reflects government’s broader commitment to transparency, accountability, efficiency, and secure identity management.
Officials say the digital transformation is expected to significantly reduce manual processing, long waiting periods, and administrative bottlenecks associated with passport and visa applications.
Supporting African Integration
President Mahama also linked the initiative to Ghana’s support for African continental integration and free movement across the continent.
He noted that despite years of political endorsement by the African Union, the implementation of major continental protocols and integration frameworks has remained slow in many African countries.
According to him, Ghana is determined to become one of the leading African nations promoting easier travel, trade, investment, tourism, and cross-border cooperation.
The President emphasized that Ghana must continue to position itself as a welcoming destination for Africans and the global community.
“This is your home,” he stated while encouraging Africans and international visitors to see Ghana as a center for opportunity, hospitality, and partnership.
African Passport Holders to Enjoy Fee Exemptions
President Mahama further announced that holders of the African Passport applying through the online system will not be required to pay certain application fees.
He described the decision as part of Ghana’s commitment to strengthening African unity and promoting easier movement among citizens across the continent.
The initiative is expected to support tourism, business activities, research, education, and investment opportunities within Africa.
Commitment to Digital Transformation
The President praised institutions including the Ministry of Interior, the Ghana Immigration Service, civil aviation authorities, and technical service providers for supporting the successful rollout of the platform.
He assured Ghanaians that government will continue investing in modern technology and digital infrastructure to improve public service delivery.
Observers say the launch of the e-passport and online visa system represents a major milestone in Ghana’s digital transformation agenda and could position the country as one of Africa’s leaders in modern immigration and travel management systems. President Mahama
