The Ministry for the Interior has announced that Republic Day 2026 will be observed on Friday, July 3, 2026, instead of its usual calendar date of Wednesday, July 1.
According to the Ministry, the change was made through an Executive Instrument issued by the President, officially designating Friday, July 3, as the day for nationwide observance of the statutory public holiday.
Ministry for the Interior Announces New Republic Day Date
In a statement, the Ministry for the Interior explained that the decision to shift the holiday was taken in line with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2001 (Act 601), as amended.
The Ministry further urged the general public, institutions, businesses, and workers across the country to take note of the revised date and make the necessary arrangements for the holiday observance.
Republic Day to Be Observed Nationwide on July 3
Republic Day is one of Ghana’s important commemorative public holidays, marking the country’s transition to a republic. While the official date falls on July 1, the government has chosen to move the holiday observance to Friday, July 3, giving citizens a new date to celebrate the occasion this year.
The revised holiday schedule means that Ghanaians will enjoy the public holiday at the end of the working week rather than in the middle of the week.
Legal Basis for the Holiday Shift
The Ministry noted that the adjustment was made under the powers provided by the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, which allows for changes in the observance date of public holidays through an Executive Instrument.
Such changes are sometimes made to improve scheduling and national observance arrangements, especially when public holidays fall midweek.
Public Urged to Take Note
The statement from the Ministry emphasized the need for all citizens to take note of the revised date to avoid confusion regarding work schedules, school calendars, and other public activities.
The announcement is expected to affect both public and private sector planning as the country prepares to mark Republic Day on the newly designated date.
