STUTTGART, Germany – The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially parted ways with Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, effective immediately. The decision was reached following a late-night emergency meeting in Stuttgart, just hours after Ghana suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Germany in an international friendly.
The Final Straw: Defeat in Stuttgart
While the match against Germany showed flashes of improvement compared to last Friday’s humiliating 5-1 loss to Austria, it was not enough to save Addo’s job.
- First Half: Arsenal’s Kai Havertz opened the scoring for Germany from the penalty spot in stoppage time.
- The Comeback: Ghana responded with spirit in the second half, with Abdul Fatawu Issahaku firing home a 70th-minute equalizer that briefly restored hope for the traveling fans.
- The Heartbreak: A late 88th-minute strike by Deniz Undav sealed Ghana’s fate, marking their fourth consecutive friendly defeat.
End of the Road for Addo
Otto Addo, who was reappointed in March 2024, leaves the post with a record of 8 wins and 9 losses in 22 games. Despite having star power like Mohammed Kudus and Antoine Semenyo at his disposal, the Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and have struggled to find a consistent tactical identity.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup only 72 days away, the GFA Executive Committee felt a change was necessary to prevent a total collapse in North America. Ghana is currently in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.
What’s Next for Ghana?
GFA President Kurt Okraku confirmed that the search for a new tactical lead is already underway.
“We will have a new coach in a week or two,” Okraku stated. “We are looking for someone with a proven track record, someone who has won trophies and can command the respect of the dressing room immediately.”
The government has reportedly signaled its financial support to bring in a “top-tier” manager. High-profile names already being linked to the vacant role include:
- Hervé Renard (Two-time AFCON winner)
- Kwesi Appiah (Former Black Stars coach)
- Pitso Mosimane
- Tom Saintfiet
The Road Ahead
The Black Stars are expected to regroup in May for friendlies against Mexico and Wales. These matches will be the final testing ground for the incoming manager before the World Cup kicks off in June.
For fans of the Black Stars, the hope is that this “shock therapy” provides the spark needed to turn the team’s fortunes around before they hit the world stage.
